Summer Olympics in Paris – the countdown for a total of 5,084 medals will start in a few days

Six World Expos and now the Olympics for the third time – few metropolises have ever hosted so many world events. At the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, which will take place from the 26th of July to the 11th of August and from the 28th of August to the 8th of September 2024, participants from over 200 countries will compete in more than 400 competitions in a variety of sports.

Changing habits of Olympic tourists

Previous Olympic events, such as those in London 2012 and Rio 2016, have shown that sports tourists spend twice as much as normal tourists. As a result, the organisers have built up an extensive sponsorship portfolio. Preparations are being made for the long term, with some contracts already signed in 2021. There are 64 domestic partners in total. Paris is preparing for the 2024 Olympic year – many cultural innovations and reopening’s are planned.

Here are some of the highlights:

  1. reopenings of museums and cultural institutions

Several museums and cultural sites are preparing to open their doors.

  1. new concepts in terms of innovative restaurants / modern leisure spaces

The scene will be given a breath of fresh air and visitors unforgettable memories.

  1. tourism: new tariffs for the entire region around Paris, hotels and travelling by metro will be

considerably more expensive during the Olympic Games.

  1. prohibition of tourist buses: Entirely in the spirit of climate protection, large tourist buses

have already been forbidden to stop in the centre of Paris since the start of 2024.

Where will the sporting events take place?

– The opening ceremony will not take place in a stadium. Instead, the sport will be brought into the city along the Seine. The athletes will arrive by boat travelling on the Seine. At least 600,000 spectators are expected to attend the ceremony

– Right in the middle of it all – beach volleyball invites you to a party under the Eiffel Tower

– The prestigious Grand Palais building, built for the 1900 World’s Fair, was renovated in over a 3-year construction period. Under the new 13,500 square metre glass roof and the 43-metre-high dome, the best fencers will duel and taekwondo will be held there also.

What are the 4 new sports at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics?

The new sports are breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing.

Breaking is a dance style that is closely linked to hip-hop culture originating in the USA. The world’s best B-Boys and -Girls celebrate their debut at the Olympics. With acrobatic movements and fast dance steps to the beat of the music, this trend from the USA, which has been well known since the 70s, is characterised by a relatively modern sport climbing style.

Sport climbing is a relatively modern sport that has experienced a boom, especially in the last 20 years. Over 30% of athletes are under the age of 18 and practise this sport both outdoors and indoors. There are now over 25 million climbing enthusiasts in 150 countries worldwide.

Skateboarding also developed in the USA in the 1950s. As a fun alternative to surfing, this sport was discovered by Californian surfers, as it can be practised whatever the weather. In the 80s, it characterised the values of freedom, rebellion and adventure.

While surfing, athletes balance on a surfboard (a short, faster and more manoeuvrable shortboard at the Olympics). They perform manoeuvres and spectacular tricks on a wave. This wave ride is being judged according to the criteria: Variety, type and difficulty of the tricks are assessed by the 5 judges at the Olympics. The athletes are also judged on their speed, power and flow (the way the movements flow into each other). These events will take place in just 4 days within a 10-day window from the 27th of July to the 8th of August.

Prefer the Olympics on site instead of at home on the sofa?

The art, cuisine and romantic ambience of Paris never fail to captivate tourists and make the city one of the most popular in the world. Paris is not just a city, but can be described as a way of life that each of us must experience at least once in our lives, why not now at the time of Olympia ‘24 !
